Andronicus Actives Tour Major LA Construction site
September 12, 2005
On Saturday, September 10, 13 actives from the Andronicus Chapter at the University of Southern California and two rushees toured the construction site for the Los Angeles County Medical Center Replacement Project.
One of the largest construction projects in the country, the county hospital, which is partnered with USC Medical Center, is a massive 1.4 million square feet, and will have over 600 beds. The project is a joint venture between HOK and local architecture firm Lee Burkhart Liu.
Andronicus Active Pearl Hung arranged the tour with HOK. She was an intern with HOK Los Angeles office, located in Culver City, California. The tour was guided by Project Manager Brian Cook, who works full-time on the job site, which is located just east of Downtown Los Angeles.
The students learned a lot about the complicated systems needed to run a modern hospital. They toured the space that will serve as the hospital's power plant once it is operational, a site that very few people will ever have the chance to see. In addition, they toured the Jail wing of the hospital, which will soon be used to house criminals in need of medical attention.
The tour concluded on the roof, which offered a fantastic view of downtown Los Angeles, Dodger Stadium and the Hollywood Sign.
