Alpha Rho Chi Foundation

The Foundation was established in 1989 to advance education and research directed toward the discovery, promotion, furtherance and dissemination of knowledge related to architecture and the allied arts. To that end, the Foundation provides scholarships for Alpha Rho Chi members; sponsors professional programs at many levels; underwrites scholarly publications and the APX Bronze Medal Program which recognizes leadership, scholarship, and service in students in both the US and Canada; and promotes new and innovative educational opportunities for students in architecture and the allied arts.

The Foundation is the only tax-deductible means for contributions to the Fraternity. It is classified as a 501(c)3 organization under its charter.

Facts

• An independent, six-member Board of Directors administers the operations of the Foundation. The Fraternity's WGA and WGE are ex-officio members of the Board. These directors have the skills necessary to effectively manage the responsibilities of the Foundation. All directors are unpaid volunteers.
• The Foundation receives gifts, invests and manages a variety of funds, receives and reviews requests for scholarships and grants, and disburses funds in accordance with the provisions of each managed fund.
• Under the terms of our charter and tax-deductible classification, the Foundation is not permitted to pay operating expenses of the Grand Council or its member chapters and alumni associations.

Accomplishments:

Since 1995, the Foundation has awarded 25 scholarships from its managed funds, 8 scholarships from the Pytheos Fund, and 1 scholarship from the Iktinos Fund.

In 2000, scholarships were awarded to

• Ryann Craig – Anthemios
• Johanna James – Anthemios
• Mara Braspenninx – Iktinos
• Trevor Hull – Pytheos
• Matthew Gillen – Vitruvius

In addition, scholarships from the Pytheos Fund went to Scott Baldermann and David Ciavarella and a scholarship from the Iktinos Fund went to Mara Braspenninx and Albert Law.

• The Foundation manages special funds for Andronicus, Anthemios, Apollodorus, Daedalus, Demetrios, Iktinos, Pytheos, and Satyros chapters and/or alumni associations.
• The Foundation has sponsored professional programs at the Fraternity's National Convention since 1991.
• The Foundation underwrites the total cost of the Fraternity's Bronze Medal Program. The Bronze Medal is awarded annually at over 120 accredited schools of architecture.
• The Foundation provides financial support to publish the Archi and the Alpha Rho Chi Newsletter.
• The Foundation shares the cost of the administrative assistant who is utilized by both the Fraternity and the Foundation.

Performance

• The Foundation realized a 25% increase in the number of managed fund accounts in FY1999.
• Utilizing a balanced portfolio of investments, the Foundation has achieved a 17.49% return for its managed fund accounts.

Current Goals

For FY 2000, the Foundation will concentrate its efforts to increase the endowment of the Charles Burchard Professional Program Fund with an additional $50,000 in new contributions. At this level of funding, the Foundation will be able to:

• Substantially underwrite the cost of professional programs, leadership training, and other important educational experiences at the Fraternity's National Convention each year.
• Provide matching funds annually to each active chapter for a professional program which they would jointly sponsor with the Foundation at their university.

How You Can Give

Cash, of course, is always welcome. Some corporations and institutions have matching funds programs which doubles the value of your gift. Stocks, bonds, insurance policies, and real estate can also provide the Foundation with needed resources.

Bequests by will, a charitable remainder unitrust, a charitable remainder annuity trust, a pooled income fund gift, or a charitable gift annuity can all support our goals while giving the donor immediate tax-free benefits.
